Starfish
Starfish

As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun.

"But the beach goes on for miles and miles and there are millions of starfish," countered the other. "How can your effort make any difference?"

The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves. "It makes a difference to this one," he said.

Samojede-in-Not e.V. was founded in 2004 by a couple of Samoyed owners, who were outraged by the circumstances and treatment of these dogs (and of course other breeds too) in mainly southern and eastern Europe. The aim of our organisation „Samojede-in-Not e.V.“ (SiN) is to rescue Samoyeds and Sammy mixes from terrible conditions and fates, to find new families for them and to ensure a happy and healthy future.  Our specialisation in Samoyeds developed, because all our members own Samoyeds and we are fascinated by the beauty, kindness, loyalty, happiness and independent spirit of this breed. I read somewhere that they are described as “the dogs that carry the spirit of Christmas in their hearts throughout the year” – this is so true and also, of course they are the only smiling dogs.

Our reward is to magic this smile back on to their beautiful faces !

In concentrating on Samoyeds we know what we are talking about and can thus decide, advise and judge correctly when rehoming a dog – this is for the benefit of the dog and his new family.

This English version is just a short résumé of the original German website. Should you be interested in more or specific information or in adopting a Samoyed, pls. contact Monica Heinemann at: monica@samojede-in-not.de  / Tel. 0049-2205-87340

Pls. note that we rescue and help all Samoyeds in every European Country and will also rehome them throughout the whole of Europe. Our work is not limited to Germany and neighbour countries.

“Samojede-in-Not” is a private organisation – all members work honorary and do so after their full-time jobs and after taking care of their families and of course their own Sammies.
We work on a non – profit basis, all monies collected as fees for adopted dogs or as donations are used for the rescue and medical treatment of the dogs of our organisation. All costs incurred in our work (petrol money, call charges, postage, administration costs) are paid by us personally and are not deducted from these monies.

Our Team:

“Samojede-in-Not” was founded in September 2004 by Tanja C. Rheinheimer and by Diana Glock.

Diana lives together with her husband Luis, her 3 Samoyeds Blanca, Odin, Scoobydoo and her foster Samoyed Lisa in Palma de Mallorca. Diana is, together with Kalle, responsible for our website. Her main task  however, is the toughest of all, she is the person who is contacted when a dog is sighted in one of the many perreras (council dog pounds, where the dogs are killed after approx. 14 days. The methods are unspeakable), if a stray is found on the street or if it is a lucky Sammy, she is contacted by the family that wishes to give him up for adoption.

SiN has established an exceptional reputation in the past 4 years and the contacts asking us for help are sadly many – pls. see our dogs for adoption (Vermittlung). Diana then seeks for shelter / foster homes for the dogs in Spain and has them prepared for their journey to their new homes.
This involves firstly letting them recuperate, feeding them up, attending to wounds, medical treatment  and then micro – chipping, EU-Passport, full vaccination and large blood test – especially checking for Mediterranean diseases.

Generally our dogs are ready for travel after a minimum of 14 days.

Responsible for adoption and rehoming are:

Monica Heinemann-Kuhl:

I live together with my husband Uwe, our 2 Sammies Nanouk & Maya, Tiffi the cat, tortoises and 2 horses near Cologne. I fortunately speak English and Spanish too, which is great, as I can support Diana on the Spanish side. I grew up in England with a Samoyed and cannot imagine a life without these great dogs. I have truly found my niche being able to help them. Many thanks to our great Team, everyone of you is always there to save a starfisch – I enjoy working with you loads!

My name is Barbara Ketteler and I live together with my family and our 4 dogs in the beautiful Niederrhein area. SiN has been my most important and rewarding occupation since June 2006. The work for the rescue of these dogs is so wonderful,  especially in this fabulous team.

Barbara is also responsible for the forster care of our Sammies.

My name is Alice Kluge, we (my husband and I, my daughter, 2 dogs and a lot of fishes) live in the middle of Germany, in a region named Westerwald.
I fell in love with the Samoyeds 2,5 years ago, when I  met our beautiful dog Flok, a Samoyed-Malamute -Mix. Flok is a SIN-dog from Tossa in Spain (Tossa was one of the most dramatic rescue operations of approx. 35 dogs in horrendous states – The rescue of these dogs was achieved in co-operation with quite a number of organisations). Flok is one of the friendliest creatures I have ever met.
This dog had a terrible past and it was wonderful to see how  Flok learnt to have faith and joy again.
Shortly after Flok´s adoption I started to work together with SIN and I still do.

I hope we will be able to save a lot of Sammies from life-threatening situations and make them smile again.

Hi! My name is Andrea Topic and I live together with my partner and my Samoyed Luna in Southern Germany. I became an active animal conservationist in 2007, after visiting an animal home in Gava, Spain during my summer holidays and seeing the misery and pain of the dogs there. Upon our return to Germany I directly offered my help to Samojede-in-Not and was accepted as a team member. I am responsible for adoptions and for the presentation of our dogs on various websites.

We look forward to hearing from you!!! ;-) Pls. contact us with any questions, help offered, or for the adoption or support of a specific Samoyed.

Adoption procedure:

We are normally contacted by email or phone by people interested in adopting a Samoyed and then send out a 3 – page questionnaire that needs to be completed. We ask for personal data, living circumstances, financial situation, experience with (Nordic)dogs and how the dog’s daily routine will be organised. This information allows us to assess if a dog and which dog would be suitable for the interested family. We want to make sure that the Sammy we rescue has a bright future and this will only be achieved if both our dog and its new family are happy and compatible. After receipt of this questionnaire we generally have a longer (telephone) conversation with the family. If all is ok on both sides we then organise for an inspection at the new dogs home in order to make sure, that the information in the questionnaire is correct and also to advise with fencing, feeding, training ....

Collecting the new family member:

After the adoption procedure is completed the “Happy Sammy”, as we call our lucky dogs with new families, is either picked up at their foster homes in Germany. If the dog is in a foster home in Germany he can generally be visited before adopting.

If the Happy Sammy is imported directly from Spain or abroad he will have to be picked up from the airport (we try to fly them into an airport near the families home, but this is not always possible and the families must be prepared to drive a longer distance in order to pick up their dog) or if it is a land transport from the final destination and meeting point.

We always need help with transportation! People prepared to drive dogs to and from airports / foster homes and more importantly people willing to accompany a dog from Spain to Germany/Holland/Switzerland/Austria/… on their flights home from their vacations – SiN carries the costs and organizes everything – there are absolutely no inconveniences for the traveller and it is an easy way to help our dogs.

If you can help, pls. contact Michael Scholz at: mijoscholz@aol.com or phone: 0049- (0) 621 – 668 4824

The adoption fees charged for the Samoyeds, are used to pay for the veterinary costs, the costs for the Spanish organisations that take care of them until they can leave for their new families and for the transport.

Transports:

Michael Scholz lives together with his wife, 3 children and 2 Sammy-Ladies Pepsi & Tala in Ludwigshafen. Mike started out as a foster family for the rescued dogs. He is now responsible for the transportation of the dogs to their new families.

He has established a whole network of contacts and organises for the flights (finding people that travel and are willing to help us bring the dogs over on their flights. We organise for the dogs to be brought to the airport, checked in, picked up on the other side and we pay the expenses in advance) or land transports of the dogs into their new homes.

He is also responsible for the purchasing, tracking and tracing of the transport boxes.

Treasurer:

Andreas Mollstätter, SiN's treasurer lives in a small village near France together with his partner Tanja, children Sharon and Tom and 2 dogs: Samoyed Puschkin and, since samoyed Chicos's death, a litte black mix Santi and two cats. Andreas specializes in IT.

Website:

My name is Karl-Heinz Pfeffer, I am 39 years old and I am responsible for our website. I have committed myself to the protection of animals, because I sincerely believe that there is nothing more important than helping helpless animals. I find that mankind carries this responsibility and I am trying to behave as a role model, setting an example of how to act in a better way. Best regards from Germany,

Kalle

From September 2004 until December 2006 we have managed to successfully rescue and rehome 109 Samoyeds!

How you can help us:

  1. General donations
  2. Financial help for dogs that will have to spend their lives in a private pound abroad (generally these dogs are sick and need expensive medical treatment). These monies go directly to the pound the dogs are in.
  3. Transportation of dogs (flights or passage for dogs to Germany and sometimes within Germany)
  4.  Helping us find new families for our dogs
  5. Taking dogs into foster care until we do find new homes.

Our Website is updated on a daily basis, unfortunately we do not have the time to translate the news everyday, so we hope the following guide will help you to navigate through our homepage. If not pls. contact us.
